A fiber attenuator is an optical device that can reduce the energy of an optical signal. It is used to attenuate the input optical power and avoid the distortion of the optical receiver due to the super strong input optical power. As an optical passive device, the optical fiber attenuator is used for debugging the optical power performance in the optical communication system, debugging the calibration and correction of the optical fiber instrument, and attenuating the optical fiber signal. The product is made of attenuated fiber doped with metal ions, which can adjust the optical power to the required level.

Why use fiber attenuators
The intensity of the optical signal received by various optical receiving devices is limited, and it needs to be within a certain range. If the optical power is too weak or too strong, the device cannot work normally. When the optical power is too strong, the optical attenuation will be used to adjust the optical power and use it to reduce it to the allowable range. Otherwise, even if the equipment can be used, it will be detrimental to its life. Therefore, the effect of fiber attenuators is still very large.
Optical fiber attenuators are divided into the following four categories according to different interfaces
1. SC optical fiber attenuator: applied to SC optical fiber interface, similar to RJ-45 interface, but SC interface is flatter, and the contact piece inside is a copper column;
2. LC fiber attenuator: applied to LC fiber interface, can be used to connect SFP modules, adopts modular jack (RJ) latch mechanism, easy to operate, often used in routers;
3. FC optical fiber attenuator: applied to the FC optical fiber interface, the jacket is wrapped with a metal sleeve, and the fastening method is a turnbuckle. Generally used on the ODF side, mostly used for patch panels;
4. ST optical fiber attenuator: used in ST optical fiber interface, commonly used in optical fiber distribution frame, the outer shell is round, fastened with turnbuckle, often used in optical fiber distribution frame.
