5 common optical module packaging standard forms

2022-11-02 17:07:14

As one of the basic components of network construction, optical modules are very critical in the entire network construction. With the increasing technological level, the packaging form of optical modules is also constantly evolving. The volume is changing in the direction of getting smaller and smaller, and the speed, power consumption, distance, cost, etc. are also constantly moving forward. So what are the common packaging forms of optical modules?

Optical module package form

SFP package

SFP optical module is a small pluggable optical module, currently the highest data rate can reach 155M/622M/1.25G/2.125G/4.25G/8G/10G, usually connected with LC jumper.

SFP optical modules also include 100M SFP, Gigabit SFP, BIDI SFP, CWDM SFP and DWDM SFP. Each optical module has undergone strict compatibility tests to ensure product reliability and stability, and is fully compatible with various brands. Switches and other equipment.

SFP+ package

The shape of the SFP+ optical module is the same as that of the SFP optical module, but the supported rate can reach 10G, which is often used for medium and short distance transmission. Compared with the XFP optical module, there is no CDR module inside the SFP+, so the size and power consumption of the SFP+ are smaller than that of the XFP.

CFP package

CFP should be the most common packaging form in optical modules. The C in CFP represents 100 in the Roman numeral clock, so CFP is mainly aimed at applications with rates of 100G (including 40G) and above. The CFP family mainly includes CFP/CFP2/CFP4/CFP8.

When the CFP package was first proposed, the rate of a single channel of 25Gb/s was technically difficult to achieve, so the rate of each electrical interface of CFP was defined as 10Gb/s, and 40G and 40G and 100G module rate.

QSFP+ package

QSFP+ optical module is a four-channel small and hot-swappable optical module, which supports connection with MPO and LC fiber jumpers, and is larger in size than SFP+ optical modules.

X2, XENPAK package

X2 and XENPAK optical modules are mostly used in 10 Gigabit Ethernet, usually connected with SC jumpers. X2 optical modules are evolved from the standard of XENPAK optical modules. Since XENPAK optical modules need to be slotted on the circuit board when they are installed on the circuit board , the implementation is more complicated, and high-density applications cannot be achieved. The improved X2 optical module is only about half the size of XENPAK, and can be directly placed on the circuit board, so it is suitable for high-density rack systems and PCI network card applications.
