What is the longest transmission distance of single-mode fiber patch cords?

2022-04-19 16:36:49

Carrier-grade single-mode fiber jumper transmission distance: single-mode fiber optic cable can transmit 64 40G Ethernet channels with a maximum transmission distance of 2840 miles. Single-mode fiber is mainly composed of core cladding and cladding; the core is made of highly transparent material; the refractive index of the cladding is slightly smaller than that of the core, resulting in an optical waveguide effect, so that most of the electromagnetic field must be transmitted in the core. ; The role of the coating is to protect the fiber from water vapor erosion and mechanical wear, while increasing the flexibility of the fiber. In addition to the coating, a plastic jacket is usually added.

What is the difference between single mode fiber and multimode fiber?

1. Refractive index difference:

Most single-mode fibers use a stepped index profile. Multimode fibers can use either a step-index profile or a gradient-index profile; therefore, silica fibers can generally use multi-mode step-index fibers, multi-mode gradient-index fibers, and single-mode step-index fibers.

2. Different transmission modes:

Carrier-grade single-mode fiber patch cords can only transmit one mode at a given operating wavelength, while multimode fiber can transmit multiple modes. The propagation of electromagnetic waves such as light in optical fibers belongs to dielectric circular waveguides. When light is completely reflected at the interface of the medium, the electromagnetic wave is confined in the medium, known as a guided wave or guided mode. With a given guided wave and operating wavelength, there are multiple incident conditions that satisfy the condition of total reflection, which are called different guided wave modes. According to the transmission mode, it is divided into multi-mode fiber and single-mode fiber.

3. Differences in transmission distance:

The transmission distance and transmission bandwidth of single-mode fiber are obviously caused by multi-mode fiber. If the transmission distance is greater than 5 kilometers, single-mode fiber is the longest time for transmission of large broadband data signals in the application. If the transmission distance is only a few kilometers, multi-mode is the best choice because the LED transmitter/receiver requires more lasers than single-mode and is therefore much cheaper.

4. The wavelength of optical fiber transmission is different:

The core diameter of the carrier-grade single-mode fiber jumper is very small, and it can only transmit in single mode at a given operating wavelength, with transmission frequency bandwidth and large transmission capacity. Multimode fibers are fibers that can transmit in multiple modes at a given operating wavelength. Compared with single-mode fiber, the transmission performance of multi-mode fiber is poor.
