What is a Fiber Optic Transceiver

Fiber optic transceivers, also known as photoelectric converters, are Ethernet transmission medium conversion units that exchange short-distance twisted-pair electrical signals and long-distance optical signals. Different viewing angles make people have different understandings of fiber optic transceivers, such as single 10M, 100M fiber optic transceivers, 10/100M adaptive fiber optic transceivers and 1000M fiber optic transceivers according to the transmission rate. To put it bluntly, it is to convert an electrical signal into an optical signal, transmit it to the other end through an optical fiber, and then convert the optical signal back to an electrical signal, which is a fiber optic transceiver. Subdivided into single-mode and multimode fiber optic transceivers

Introduction to Optical Module Installation

1. First check whether the indicator light of the optical fiber transceiver or optical module and the indicator light of the twisted pair port are on?


A sort of. If the optical port (FX) indicator of the transceiver is off, please confirm whether the optical fiber link is crossed? One end of the fiber optic jumper is connected in parallel; the other end is cross-connected.


b. If the optical port (FX) indicator of transceiver A is on, but the optical port (FX) indicator of transceiver B is off, the fault is on the side of transceiver A: one possibility is: optical transmission of transceiver A (TX) The port is broken, because the optical port (RX) of transceiver B cannot receive optical signals; another possibility is: there is a problem with the optical fiber link of the optical transmission port of transceiver A (TX) (maybe the optical cable or optical jumper is broken up).


c. The twisted pair (TP) indicator light is off, please confirm whether the twisted pair is connected incorrectly or not? Please use a continuity tester to test (but the twisted pair indicator of some transceivers must wait for the optical fiber chain light to be turned on).


d. Some transceivers have two RJ45 ports: (To HUB) indicates that the connection line connected to the switch is a straight line; (To Node) indicates that the connection line connected to the switch is a crossover line.


e. There is an MPR switch on the side of some transmitters: it means that the connection line connected to the switch is a straight line; DTE switch: the connection line connected to the switch is a crossover line.


2. Are the optical cables and fiber jumpers disconnected?

A sort of. Optical cable continuity detection: Use a laser flashlight, sunlight or illuminator to illuminate one end of the optical cable connector or coupler; see if there is visible light at the other end? If there is visible light, it means that the optical cable is not broken.


b. On-off detection of optical fiber connection: irradiate one end of the optical fiber jumper with a laser flashlight, sunlight, etc.; see if there is visible light at the other end? If there is visible light, it means that the fiber jumper is not broken.


3. Is the half/full duplex mode wrong?

Some transceivers have FDX switches on the side: full duplex; HDX switches: half duplex.


4. Detection with optical power meter

The luminous power of fiber optic transceiver or optical module under normal conditions: multi-mode: between -10db--18db; single-mode 20km: between -8db--15db; single-mode 60km: between -5db--12db; if If the optical power of the fiber optic transceiver is between -30db--45db, it can be judged that there is a problem with the transceiver


2. Judgment method for common faults of transceivers

There are many types of optical modules, but the fault diagnosis methods are basically the same.
