Technical characteristics of OPPC optical cable

OPPC is another new type of power special optical cable after ADSS and OPGW. OPPC integrates the functions of optical cable and electric energy transmission, and can realize optical fiber communication while satisfying the normal electric energy transmission function.


It has dual functions of phase line and communication. It is mainly used for voltage levels below 110kV. In medium and low voltage grids, especially those below 35kV, some of them may not be grounded, so it is impossible to install OPGW. In all grids, only the phase conductors are essential. In order to meet the requirements of power monitoring or optical fiber network, OPPC and OPGW technologies are relatively close. In a conventional phase line structure, fiber optic elements are added in a suitable manner to become a fiber optic composite phase line.


OPPC uses the corridor resources and tower resources of a power transmission line to build optical cables along power lines. Compared with conventional wires and ordinary optical cables, the material cost can be saved by 10%-20%, and it can also save a construction cost. Therefore, it has relative technical and economic advantages.

1. The design of OPPC cable is suitable for any new medium and low voltage transmission lines.


2. OPPC optical cable is similar to OPGW structure, but considering the impact of long-term working temperature on optical fiber transmission performance and optical fiber life, OPPC has long-term carrying power transmission due to the phase line function.


3. The mechanical and electrical characteristics of OPPC should be consistent with adjacent conductors, such as DC resistance or impedance similar to adjacent conductors, to ensure that transient voltage changes maintain three-phase balance.


4. OPPC is installed in a high voltage system. Fittings and accessories such as strain clamps, suspension clamps and terminal splice boxes are insulated. Clips can be insulated with string or insulated hanging rope. Photoelectric insulation/separation and connection require special technology and relatively high construction requirements.

OPPC optical cables are mainly used for voltage lines below 110KV, such as suburban distribution networks and rural power grids. Affected by factors such as power outages and safety, it is mainly applied to new lines.


(1) Replace one phase of the three-phase power system with OPPC to form a transmission line consisting of two wires and one OPPC; the mechanical and electrical characteristics match the adjacent two wires.


(2) In the medium and low voltage power grids, especially the distribution lines below 35KV, it can be used when the ground wire is not installed.


(3)Not suitable for setting the transmission lines of OPGW and ADSS cables.
