How to choose fiber pigtails and fiber jumpers

2022-10-19 16:36:25

Fiber pigtails and fiber jumpers are two common network connection components in fiber optic networks. They have many common features, and at the same time, there are some differences in some aspects. Understanding the similarities and differences between the two will help you make the best choice for your project application. Let's talk about the similarities and differences between fiber jumpers and fiber pigtails through structure and application.

ZR Cable jumper

Structure comparison of fiber pigtails and fiber jumpers

Optical fiber pigtail, also known as pigtail, refers to the fiber optic cable that only has a connector at one end, and the other end is a bare fiber of the fiber optic cable core, which needs to be connected to other fiber optic cable cores by fusion splicing. A fiber patch cord is a short fiber optic cable with connectors at both ends. The connector types at both ends of the fiber optic cable can either be the same or different.

Fiber pigtails and fiber patch cords have a lot in common in structure. They are available in singlemode and multimode fiber types, and they are available in simplex and duplex connector types. In addition, whether it is a fiber patch cord or a fiber pigtail, it can be connected with a variety of fiber optic connectors, including FC, SC, ST, LC, MTRJ, MPO, MU, SMA, E2000, etc.

The main difference in structure between fiber pigtails and fiber jumpers is that fiber jumpers are a fixed-length fiber optic cable with connectors at both ends, and fiber pigtails are fiber optic cables with connectors at only one end at both ends. cable. In addition, a complete fiber patch cord can be cut into two shorter length fiber pigtails.

Application comparison of fiber pigtails and fiber jumpers

Fiber pigtails and fiber jumpers are used to provide interconnection and cross-connection in the network connection of access equipment, and are generally widely used in telecommunications equipment rooms and data centers. They are available in OM4, OM3, OM2, OM1 and OS1/OS2 fiber types to meet Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet requirements and high-speed Fibre Channel network connectivity requirements. However, they also have their own fields of application.

Fiber pigtails support end-connection applications for field splicing. It should be installed where it is protected and where fusion splicing is required, so fiber pigtails are usually used in conjunction with fiber management equipment such as fiber distribution frames (ODFs), splice boxes and fiber distribution boxes. The application of fiber pigtails can be seen everywhere, but the most common application is the combination of other optical components. For example, waterproof fiber pigtails, with thick polyethylene (PE) outer jackets and large diameters, are generally used in outdoor applications.

Fiber patch cords are typically used to connect fiber patch panels to ports. It mainly supports network applications in horizontal and equipment dispersed areas, and meets cabling requirements. Various outer sheath materials such as conventional (OFNR), flame retardant (OFNP) and low smoke zero halogen (LSZH) are supported. In addition, fiber patch cords also support high-speed (10/40 Gbps) communications, and can be used in many fields, such as integrated optics, laser detection and display, and material processing.
