Main factors affecting fiber fusion

The preparation of fiber end face includes the steps of peeling, cleaning and cutting. Qualified fiber end face is a necessary condition for welding, and the quality of end face affects the quality of welding. So, this whole process is called fiber fusing.

Main factors affecting fiber fusion:


There are many factors affecting the fiber fusion loss, which can be roughly divided into two categories: intrinsic factors and non-intrinsic factors.


1. The intrinsic factor of optical fiber refers to the factor of optical fiber itself, which mainly has four points.


(1) Fiber mode field diameter is inconsistent;


(2) The core diameter of the two optical fibers is mismatched;


(3) the core section is not round;


(4) The concentricity of fiber core and cladding is not good.


Among them, the inconsistency of fiber mode field diameter has the greatest impact. According to CCITT(International Telegraph and Telephone Advisory Committee) recommendation, the tolerance standard of single-mode fiber is as follows:


The diameter of the mode field :(9-10 μm)±10%, that is, the tolerance is about ±1μm;

Cladding diameter: 125±3μm;


The concentricity error of mode field is less than or equal to 6%, and the inroundness of cladding is less than or equal to 2%.


2. The non-intrinsic factor affecting fiber connection loss is connection technology.


(1) Axis misalignment: The single-mode optical fiber core is very thin, and the axis misalignment of the two butt fibers will affect the connection loss. When the displacement is 1.2μm, the connection loss reaches 0.5dB.


(2) Axial tilt: When the optical fiber section is tilted by 1°, about 0.6dB connection loss will be generated. If the connection loss is required to be ≤0.1dB, the inclination Angle of the single-mode optical fiber should be ≤0.3°.


(3) End face separation: The connection of the active connector is not good, it is easy to produce end face separation, resulting in large connection loss. When the welding machine discharge voltage is low, it is easy to produce the end face separation, which can be found in the welding machine with tensile test function.


(4) end face quality: fiber end face of the flatness of the poor will also produce losses, even bubbles.


(5) The physical deformation of the optical fiber near the connection point: the tensile deformation of the optical cable in the erection process, and the clamping pressure of the cable in the connection box is too large, will have an impact on the connection loss, and even the welding can not be improved for several times.


3. The influence of other factors.


The welding loss value will be affected by the operation level of the connector, the operation procedure, the process level of the disc fiber, the cleaning degree of the electrode in the welding machine, the setting of welding parameters, and the cleaning degree of the working environment.
