FTTH Network Construction Using Optical Splitter

In the Passive Optical Network (PON, Passive Optical Network) of Fiber to the Home (FTTH, Fiber to the Home), the optical splitter plays an important role. It is usually installed between the Optical Line Terminal (OLT, Optical Line Terminal) and the Optical Network Terminal (ONT, Optical Network Terminal) of the PON, making it a reality for multiple users to share a PON interface.

It is usually installed between the Optical Line Terminal (OLT, Optical Line Terminal) and the Optical Network Terminal (ONT, Optical Network Terminal) of the PON, making it a reality for multiple users to share a PON interface.


Optical splitting construction of FTTH network

PON is the foundation of FTTH network, and optical splitter is an important part of PON network. There are two types of optical splitting in PON network: first-level splitting and second-level splitting.

FTTH Cable

The first-level splitting mode means that the optical splitters are concentrated in the fiber distribution box, and are directly connected to the OLT at the central office through a single fiber, and the other end is connected to multiple ONTs at the user end through multiple fibers. The splitting ratio of the optical splitter is usually 1:32 or 1:64.


Two-stage optical splitting means that two sets of optical splitters are connected between the OLT and the ONU in a cascaded manner. This beam splitting method has two beam splitting points: a primary beam splitting point and a secondary beam splitting point. The first-level light splitting point is usually located near the central office, and a 1×4 optical splitter is generally used;


The secondary light splitting point is generally installed at the user end (such as in the corridor), and there are multiple optical splitters, generally 1×8 optical splitters are used. The first-level splitting mode (centralized distribution of optical splitters) has the advantages of high flexibility, low operating costs and easy maintenance, while the second-level splitting mode (cascade distribution of optical splitters) has faster investment returns and low initial investment costs. Features.


Therefore, the first-level light splitting method is usually suitable for urban centers or towns where users are concentrated, and the second-level light splitting method is usually used in villages with sparse population distribution.
