The difference between fiber patch cords, pigtails, and fiber optic connectors

2022-05-12 16:24:35

(1) Optical fiber jumpers are used as jumpers from equipment to optical fiber wiring links. They have a thicker protective layer and are generally used for the connection between optical transceivers and terminal boxes.

(2) Pigtails are also called pigtails. Only one end has a connector, and the other end is a broken end of an optical fiber core. It is connected to other optical fiber cores by welding. It often appears in optical fiber terminal boxes and is used to connect optical cables. and fiber optic transceivers (couplers, jumpers, etc. are also used between them).

Optical fiber connector refers to a coupler (flange), which is a device for detachable (movable) connection between optical fibers and optical fibers. It precisely connects the two end faces of optical fibers to maximize the light energy output from the transmitting optical fibers. Coupling into the receiving fiber to the maximum extent and minimizing the impact on the system due to its intervention in the optical link are the basic requirements of fiber optic connectors. Simply put, it is used to connect pigtails and fiber jumpers.

To a certain extent, the optical fiber connector also affects the reliability and performance of the optical transmission system. First, the optical cable comes in from the outdoors, and the optical cable must be spliced in the optical cable box (that is, the terminal box). The fusion splicing of the optical cable is a door technology. , You need to strip the optical cable, use the pigtail to splicing the fine fibers in the optical cable, and put it in the box after welding, so that our pigtail will come out. The head of the optical fiber is connected to the ODF (a kind of shelf, connected with a coupler), and the other side of the shelf is also a pigtail (optical fiber jumper can also be used), which is connected to the photoelectric converter, and the network cable of the photoelectric transceiver is connected to the router. ---- switch --- LAN --- host.

In the above steps, the distribution frame of the optical fiber can be ignored, and the pigtail can be directly connected to the optical fiber transceiver after it comes out, so that the coupler is not needed.

LC to LC

A coupler is just what connects 2 pigtails (or fiber patch cords) together. A fiber optic coupler is an active connection (commonly known as a flange) for two fibers or pigtails.

An optical fiber terminal box is a terminal connector of an optical cable, one end of which is an optical cable and the other end is a pigtail, which is equivalent to a device that splits an optical cable into a single optical fiber.

The optical fiber fusion splicing box is used to connect two optical cables to form a long optical cable, and they cannot be used interchangeably. The optical cable and the optical terminal are connected through the optical terminal box, that is, only pigtails can be inserted on the optical terminal.

Can it be understood in this way about terminal boxes and splicing boxes? In which the two ends of the optical fiber are spliced, but the former is the fusion splicing of the optical cable and the pigtail, and the latter is the fusion splicing between the optical cables. This is basically correct. Is the junction box and the terminal box the same?

The answer is: not the same.

The splice box is fully sealed and can be waterproof, but it cannot fix the pigtail; the terminal box is not waterproof, and the internal structure can fix the optical cable on one side and the pigtail coupler on the other side, which is connected to the optical fiber or the pigtail. It's just that the connection part is active, not welded.

The coupler can only connect two pigtails and divide the interfaces such as SC/PC and FC/PC, and the optical cable and the pigtail are spliced by a fusion splicer, which is dead.
