Fiber optic attenuators are used to attenuate the performance loss caused by the long-term use of the fiber. Usually, the fiber attenuator needs to be tested on the real machine. While fiber attenuators can simulate long-term optical loss from a fiber, they cannot simulate dispersion due to fiber length. Simply put, in optical modules, the use of fiber attenuators can reduce the bit error rate (BER). In order to achieve the best bit error rate, the optical power needs to be reduced, which necessitates the use of fiber attenuators. Excessive power is generated when the transmitter is too close to the optical module.

Optical fiber attenuators can be subdivided into three types: online, fixed and yin-yang. The specific differences are as follows:
1. Online fiber attenuator
Online fiber attenuators are optical communication devices that provide specific attenuation according to the different needs of different projects. It consists of three metal nuts with two removable FC joints. By adjustment, the two movable FC joints are locked to produce the desired decrement in distance. Online optical fiber attenuators can be applied to various optical fiber transmission lines to perform pre-set light intensity attenuation.
This optical fiber attenuator is mainly used in optical fiber communication network, optical fiber CATV network, optical fiber data network and optical fiber test system. The attenuation value of the online fiber attenuator has high precision, low additional loss and better stability than other types, and its attenuation value can be adjusted according to your own needs. The port can be connected to ST, FC, SC, LC connectors.
2. Fixed fiber attenuator
The shape of the fixed optical fiber attenuator is more like an adapter. It is mainly used in optical communication systems, adjusting optical power performance, calibrating and correcting optical fiber instruments, and optical fiber signal attenuation. The product is made of attenuating fiber doped with metal ions to adjust the optical power to the desired level. Jumpers of FC, SC, ST and LC connectors can be used. It is very convenient to install and easy to use, and is loved by many users.
3. Yin-yang fiber optic attenuator
This fiber optic attenuator is a male-female device, which is the same as the fixed fiber optic attenuator, and also supports a variety of LC, SC, FC and ST connection methods. The male and female fiber attenuators are ground by PC, UPC or APC, and the attenuation value is 1-30dB. It adopts metal ion attenuation fiber technology to achieve attenuation effect, and has the advantages of light weight, high precision, various forms, easy to use, small size and light-resistant power light source. Mainly used in: optical distribution frame, optical fiber network system, high-speed optical fiber transmission system, cable television (CATV) system, long-distance trunk dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system, optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM).
